Preparing your portfolio for your application to art and design school can seem like a daunting task so here are some guidelines to help you put it together.
Clearly label an A4 folder with clear plastic sleeves with your name, a contact phone number and the name of the programme(s) you are applying for.
Use a digital or analogue camera to take photographs of your work and put them into the A4 folder. Do not include original work as you can always bring this to your interview if you wish to but do include working drawings or an A4 sketchbook where available.
Include a short cover letter at the start of your portfolio briefly outlining your background and achievements.
Where you are submitting slides or a CD/DVD, these should also be clearly labelled with your name and the name of the programme(s) you are applying for and contained within a strong clear plastic case to protect them. It is also helpful if you include accompanying printed examples of the work contained in the slides or on the CD/DVD within an A4 folder along with a short cover letter briefly outlining your background and achievements.
A total of 12-24 images is sufficient and aim to include a range of media where this is available to you ie drawing, painting, sculpture, design, or photography. The purpose of a portfolio is to demonstrate an in-depth exploration of ideas. If you have developed ideas in only one or two mediums, provide a selection of work which shows a range of work in those mediums.
If you are invited to an interview following the submission of your application come prepared to talk about your work and ideas in depth. Any additional work, workbooks and original pieces can also be brought to this interview. Please feel free to bring a support person(s) to your interview should you wish to do so.
