- 据留学360介绍：柏林自由大学创建于1948年，迄今已有50年的历史，是德国首都最大的综合性大学，也是德国乃至世界的著名高校之一。
冷战期间，位于菩提树下大街的原柏林大学划归东柏林，受以苏联为首的社会主义阵营管治。为了追求学术自由，原柏林大学的部分师生出走，在美英等西方阵营的支持下在西柏林成立了柏林自由大学，成为西德学术重镇。
真理，公平，自由（Veritas - Iustitia - Libertas. Wahrheit Gerechtigkeit - Freiheit）是1948年柏林自由大学建校时的校训。
2006年1月，德国科学基金会（DFG）和科学委员会在波恩公布德国精英大学候选名单中，柏林自由大学位列其中。2007年10月19日，德国首轮第二批“精英大学”评选最终揭晓，柏林自由大学正式成为德国九所精英大学之一。2012年，柏林自由大学重新当选德国11所“精英大学”之一。在usnews，QS，泰晤士报等重要的国际榜单排名中，始终稳居德国前五位。2010年在QS世界大学排名中位列第70位，2015在usnews排名81位。
